Study: It's Good To Talk?

Take part in a new research project into people with speech dysfluencies.

James Whitehurst, a student at Keele University, invites you to take part in his study.

James says, "Often research into stammering assumes that living with it is something to overcome. With our research, we want to challenge these ideas and instead explore how society could better include dysfluent speakers and different voices.

'I want to talk with people who stammer to explore how speech dysfluency connects to their feelings of belonging, wellbeing and participation. The project allows you to share your thoughts and experiences in an open manner".

What will it involve?

If you would like to take part, you can do one or more of the things listed below. It's up to you how much you want to do. You can choose to do one, or all three.

  1. Attend a one-to-one interview lasting 60 to 90 minutes, in-person or online.
  2. Keep a diary of your feelings towards stammering. It can be a written or video diary.
  3. Attend a workshop to make your own 'Zine'. Use your creativity in this group workshop to express your feelings around stammering. This will last around 2 hours, in-person or online. (Find out more about making Zines, from the Tate website).

If you help by doing an interview, you will get a £15 Amazon voucher. If you keep a diary and/or attend a workshop you will be entered into a prize draw for a £50 Amazon voucher.

Who can take part?

You can take part in this study if you:

  • self-identify as having speech dysfluency
  • live in the UK
  • are willing to share your life experiences
  • are between the age of 18 and 45. If you are older than 45 but feel your experiences are valuable, get in touch.
